Phil Parsonage
SENIOR . Copywriter, Specialist writer
As a Marketing and Management graduate I was well pleased to get my first job as a Financial Services Product Manager. It was the early nineties and I soon had seafood chowder and pinot stains on my new ties. But it was exposure to advertising and our agency that proved most interesting so within a year I’d switched my shirt and tie for jeans and Mambo t-shirts.
My copywriting tuition started at Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington. I was there five years, interrupted by some international experience: driving through the States, diving off Honduras, snowboarding in France, and I can’t remember what in India.
Early on in my career, a lot of radio writing trained me to choose words wisely. A lot of retail taught me to cram plenty in between commas and ands. Now, a lot of years later, I’ve written everything from big brand TVCs to brash DM letters, one-liners to web pages.
Since moving to Auckland I’ve mixed up freelancing with fulltime stints and have been a keen Pond member for over two years now. It’s fair to say consulting has reinvigorated my creativity, with an ever-changing client list, fresh faces, and varying coffee machines. My marketing days have also paid off with increased involvement in strategy development and pitches.
