Glenn Chapman
CONSULTANT / CD . Art director, Designer
I guess it was fait accompli that design & image making would be my career path from a very early age. School projects would usually have carefully considered typographic & illustrative elements, although the scientific content might only attract a C, the artistic efforts were always admired. Discovering the power of cartoon & satire later also proved to be a useful tool to have in ones armoury, it was (usually) appreciated even by those in the firing line.
A four year global gallivant funded by all kinds of work from casino cocktail barman, movie extra in Israel, selling photocopiers in London with a boss who was frighteningly like Gordon Gekko to fixing safari trucks in Africa. All this provided a wealth of interesting experiences and brought sharply into focus what I really wanted to do. I then happily returned to NZ to study Visual Communication Design at Carrington Polytechnic to pursue a career as a Graphic Designer.
My real education started over the next six years with full time stints at V8, Mojo and Generator, before flying the coup to London in 2000. Then followed a great five year innings with M&C Saatchi and then a year contract at TBWA also freelance assignments at Ogilvy, VCCP, McCann Erickson before returning home to the nest again in late 2007. Since then I’ve enjoyed freelance stints at Lowe and Draft FCB that have eased me back into the vibrant ebb and flow of life in Aotearoa.
With fourteen years in the industry I’ve done loads of big stuff and even more little stuff, won a few awards but what still gets me out of bed in the morning is the opportunity to create fresh work that excites and to collaborate with talented like-minded people.
My other creative side: Reading is a great passion and I still like to paint when time permits but these days it’s more likely to be a window or the hallway.
